Workout Clothing for January

It’s the beginning of January, the New Years Resolutions have barely just started or maybe they need a bit of poking and prodding. One of the popular resolutions is getting fit or losing a few extra pounds, and when the winter weather is still whistling at our windows, it’s very hard to not snuggle up and call it a cosy night till February.

But…it’s the New Year! And either you swore to yourself it’s ‘The New Year, New Me’ or you’ve been doing great on your exercise regime but the lazy motion of winter has gotten to you.

Well, here’s a few of my favourite winter workout gear and some tips to beat the cold and to get out into the windy and icy streets.

First things to get cold before you get your rhythm is the little digits on your hands or feet. The best combat for your hands is thermal gloves. Thermal is king. And automatically you might think of the thick won’t-let-you-do-anything mittens, and these are brilliant when the only thing you have to do with your hands is click over a song. But here’s my top picks:

Black Diamond Lightweight Screentap Liner Glove by Backcountry

It doesn’t matter if you end up buying men’s [women-sizes are harder to come by], you slip those babies on with their too long fingers and puffy edges you’ll little number will be snug-as-a-bug!

It’s always fingers and toes that get the coldest. So, forget about the cute and fashionable ankle socks, get those cotton sole-padded feet warmers! Your toes will thank you when the win hits -2 and should be screaming in agony but instead you’re still able to pound the pavement with your cosy little numbers all snuggle and warm.

Thermal Liner Socks by Sealskinz

The icy wind can leave you with itchy and bumpy skin. So keeping warm can stop the itchiness when coming in from the cold. The answer, thermal leggings. The North Face is top dog for these!

Women Warm Tights

And, of course, you cannot go wrong with Nike

Most workout jackets are light an airy and are atrocious when it comes to trying to keep warm. Nike is the perfect sweat reducing and cooling jackets that are perfect for keeping body heat and holding off the coldness.

If you’re tight on money and need to use what you have in the wardbrobe then…Layer, Layer, layer. Slip on two shirts instead of one, you’ll be surprise at how much heat is you keep! Also, tights under workout leggings is another cheap and perfect solution to keeping body heat in.

Last thing last…
Throw a hat and scarf on if you want. But I tend to find that my hands get warm coming to the end of my workout so a hat is just going to make me warmer and I also like the crispiness of the cold on my cheeks and nose that keeps me going for longer.

Hi everyone!

Yea, it’s me. I’m not dead! I haven’t posted in a while as life got in the way and I momentarily completely forgot about my little blog….oops.

I’m going to start back up reviewing indie authors in the next week and then I have a few posts on the back-burner that are waiting to see the light of day.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful year and see you later!

Chester Bennington – You’ll Never Be Replaced.

Linkin Park Band

Linkin Park

I usually don’t get upset over celeb deaths. They usually don’t mean anything to me or they were has-beens.

Chester Bennington was neither.

My first taste of Linkin Park was when I was 13 in 2003 with Breaking the Habit, it was being played on my friends tv. I was glued to the video and I didn’t know it, but by the end of the that single song…I was in love.

My friend, as a random present, gave me Collision Course. Again I loved it as much as all their other songs.

There has never been an album of theirs that I didn’t fail to love and would listen to on repeat for days at-a-time. I still do.

There has never been another band in my life that I’ve loved and connected with so much.

Today the world has lost a legend.

And I feel like I’ve been left with a hole that will never be filled.

RIP Chester.

March Madness

Ahh!! It’s the 1st of March today and so I woke up bright and early and decided to write a post!

My March Madness Goals

Editing this book is getting ridiculous. It’s taking forever, I’m only on chapter 6 so far and my plan is to just get it done and over with, so my aim is to finish editing it by the end of March. I’ve been editing this book on-and-off now for a few years [but it has had four completely gut-outs and do-overs]. It’s staying the way it is and I’m pushing to finally get it out to Beta Readers by the end of the month.

Burn 500-calories a day. I missed my morning walk this morning, but I still have my night walk and workout to get March 1st to about 700 burned calories. I also had my fatty day yesterday with it being Pancake Tuesday….along with a takeaway and home-baked cookies. I need to sweat for the rest of the week….woop!!

Money Wise
I’m going to buy glasses someday this week. I was supposed to go tonight, but the store never got back in touch so it might be the weekend. I lost my old glasses so really need to buy new ones and I’m so excited!! My previous glasses I’ve had since secondary school.

Acting – I’ve been asked to three auditions so far, but I keep getting cold feet with the notion that You’re a fraud, you don’t know what you’re doing so I’m going to sign up to either of two 8-week acting courses that I have my eyes on, might be later in the year as one of the teachers hasn’t been in touch and the next class starts next Monday.

I just noticed a very common thread now….why are people not getting back in touch with me?

What’s everyone’s March’s goals?

Let’s all keep moving forward and upwards!!

Don’t Call it a Diet

“Oh you’re on a diet?”

“How’s the diet going?

“Are you still dieting?

Yes, I made the mistake of letting slip that I’ve changed my eating habits. See? It’s not a diet. To me diets are something you do till you get to your ideal weight and then it’s back to your usually eating once you do. And the cycle repeats.

Is it just me who comes across this, but once people know you’re on a diet that they have a say in what you do with your body?

I got this comment the other day:

You don’t need to diet.

Why do people think that they have a say on what someone else does with their life? With their body? Maybe it’s just me, but I always thought when people changed their lifestyle and eating habits, it’s not for the opinions of other people.  They’re doing it for themselves, they’re doing it to be healthier, to be able to do everything that they couldn’t, to feel confident and to look good. It’s not about what people think.

My weight loss journey so far…

Early last year I got to my heaviest of 13.5stone and I had a bridesmaid dress to fit into and that’s when I got shook out of my little bad-eating stupor that I’d been in. I didn’t take a photo at this stage as I physically hated what I saw and it’s burned into my brain for eternity.

I’m now down to 11.9stone. The problem now is I don’t have much of a stomach, but it’s all my hips in stubborn love-handles which I’m going to start hitting over the next week.

It’s the simple things now that make me feel great- instead of going to the ‘goodie’ press I have a glass of water and if I’m still hungry I reach for an apple or a handful of grapes. I no longer crave chocolate or sweets, I can finally [for the first time ever!] go weeks without touching them.

The one thing that got me hooked onto this new diet? Keeping track of what goes in vs what comes out. It makes sense and all about mathematical equations than silly little notions…it makes you accountable. It forces you to remember back to sweating it out earlier in the day when you crave for a takeaway and you count up the calories:

I did not nearly pass out for nothing.

Don’t get me wrong, if I have calories left in my day and I’ve done one or two workouts then I’m allowing myself my takeaway…dry option…no sauces, and I may still have calories left over.

Oh, and about the two workouts. It’s not hitting my gym twice a day- it’s walking the dog. It’s near-to-impossible to say no to a husky when he wants to go out. There’s just no excuse- he needs a walk and it’s not about me anymore. Even if my legs are sore and I’m still exhausted there’s over an hour of walking to do. Once you get outside, you’ll understand that it’s more of a mental battle than a physical one. You’re muscles stop hurting after the first few steps and you feel lighter, agile and more faster because of your previous workout already loosening you up.

Getting Ready for a New Blog

I’ve been thinking on-and-off for a while now about changing my blog and self hosting it so I own my content.

TheWoldOfSarahLou is coming up to it’s 2nd year in August, and I think it’ll be nice to move it before then.

The one thing keeping me from moving? I can’t think of a new name for said blog. I’ve stuck with the same name that I first came up with, and I don’t think it’s good enough for a good blog. A name should be unique and imaginative that people will remember.

I’m going to be still be writing about the same things – but I’m going to be taking it more seriously, with more photos.

I’ve done all the googling about blog names that  I can do, and I’m still stuck. I have a new theme and I know exactly how it’s going to look like, the name has yet to come to me.

I want the name to show that I’m different. I want to put something about ‘rock’ into it- because I’m a rocker, but also something that tells people that it’s going to be about writing, books, fashion etc.

Bookshops are losing out.

I’ve spent the last 20-minutes of my life searching for books on my to-read 2016 pile. There was five in total, wouldn’t you have thought that at least one of the bookshops in Dublin would have one of the books?

I could- if I really wanted to- ring them up and ask for them to get it in, but why when I’m already on my laptop and a quick google search to the Bookdepository get’s me cheaper-than-usual paperbacks and all the books that I’m looking for.

Bookshops moan and complain that big online sites such as Amazon are taking away their business or they’re being squished by Kindle and Ebooks, but how about having a system in place that allows readers in search of physical books that they can order online.

I know you can walk into the store and ask them to get a book in. I did this while in the grips of a series when I was 14, but am I really going to go out of my way to go to a bookstore just to tell them to order a book in? Nope.

The Bookdepository just got €50 from me, and I’m already planning on going there to get new releases when they come out in 2016. I feel slightly let down, because the whole experience of walking around looking for the right book, to then flick through the pages won’t be there. But I’d rather have the books than to go on a cat-and-mouse trip to find them.

Liebster Award

I’ve heard about these awards, seen them being proudly shown on blog-after-blog, and I woke up to being nominated for the Liebster Award by Jay! Thank you so much!

The Rules:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 questions your nominator gave you.
  3. Tag 11 bloggers with less than 1,000 readers.
  4. Think of 11 questions for the bloggers you have nominated.
  5. Let them know you have nominated them through social media or their blog.

Jay’s Questions

  1. What do you like to write? What specific genre? I like darkish, emotional stories because I’m pretty good at getting emotions across and making people cry.
  2. What are your writing goals for 2016? I literally just wrote them down yesterday as a ‘new years resolution’ – yea, those things we never keep to. But, as of now, it’s to write 300k or 5 novels.
  3. What kind of thing do you find yourself doing when you procrastinate on writing? Listening to music…a lot. I just got Spotify, and it’s either the best or worst decision ever, because it’s addictive, so instead of writing I’ll spend an hour gazing into space listening to songs.
  4. Do you talk to other writers about writing at all or no? Yes, my whole family know and keep updated on when I send off the manuscripts, I was also away in Amsterdam with new people when I got a rejection letter and I think once people know what drives you, they click with you more, I know a song writer and my bestie and my family are my little cheerleaders to keep me going and not get in the dumps.
  5. Does reading a book/watching a movie inspire you to write? Does the genre matter? It doesn’t matter, I think once you’re a writer you’ll find inspiration everywhere, you’ll be doing the most boring thing, but in your head you’ll be coming up brilliant and vibrant scenes.
  6. If you create fictional worlds for your writing, how in-depth do you go with world building? Depends, in my series it get’s all knotted together and twisted and everything needs a reason. It takes so much time and effort. ugh…effort.
  7. What do you plan on doing with your writing? Published writer, etc? Well, trying to get published [at 4 rejections, 5 if you count the one that didn’t reply]. Going to keep till June and then see where we are then.
  8. When did you start writing (what age)? I know this, because it was the weekend before I started secondary school [or highs chool], I was 13.
  9. Related to the above, when did you decide that “writer” was something you wanted to be? I didn’t exactly decide, I was stuck in a room, with a shitty computer and everyone was asleep, so I started typing…and I’ve been typing ever since.
  10. What hobbies do you have that are unrelated to writing? I’m trying to learn guitar and I love photography, I also want to go back into acting.
  11. Do you have any hobbies that don’t seem related to writing, but have ended up being applicable?  I don’t think so.
